Success Tip – Passion

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Passion is an interesting word.

When we lead our writing seminars, we stress the benefits of passion in writing.

Yet, it is difficult to explain, unless the writer experiences it first hand.

Passion is like fire, you need to stoke it. Even when you feel it, passion needs new ways to intensify it.

Success Tips – Journals

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Brenda and I have stressed the importance of journaling. Recently, I read an article in “The Writer,” by Edwards Cannon, that suggests six types of journals. I’m not sure I could keep up with six, but it is something some of you may find useful.

Here are Cannon’s suggestions:

  1. The free write journal
  2. The dream journal
  3. The quotation journal
  4. The submission journal
  5. The what-I-wrote-and-how-I-felt-about-it-today journal.

My own journal is a combination of 1, 3 and 5. I also have a quotation journal for special quotations that mean something to me personally. I’m not good about free writing, yet Brenda likes that type of journaling. I do a quasi free write as I put periods, and sometimes stop and think about what I’m writing. In journaling, do what is comfortable for you. The important aspect is to do it.

Success – The Ending is the Beginning 5

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

This excerpt is from “Success, Your Path to a Successful Book,” by Maralyn D.Hill and Brenda C. Hill.

No one can teach this art, and it is not found in guidebooks. Writing is as much about perspiration and determination as inspiration.

Most writing from the heart is multidimensional… all about peeling off the layers to get under the skin of a person, a place, or an onion.

Successful writing is about being observant and authentic. Most of all, like Bourdain, this writing life is about discovering that unique point of view, or twist, that makes your work your own.

If we had to sum up one winning ingredient, besides the passion for writing, that will set you apart from the others, it is originality.
It is always worth…whatever it takes.
