Exploring Self-Publishing

This year, Writer’s Digest Conference West features a special, three-session education track dedicated to self-publishing.

First, in A Self-Publishing Author’s Guide to Contracts, you’ll learn from agent and attorney Dana Newman about often overlooked contract issues, what to agree to (and to avoid!) and how to protect your rights.

Next, Keith Ogorek, SVP of Marketing for Author Solutions and a self-published author, will share his tips and tricks for effective self-marketing in his session Seven Secrets of Successful Self-Publishing.

And finally, sit in on our special panel, Self-Publishing in the Real World: What to Expect, What to Do, and How to Do It, and learn the truths, benefits and challenges of self-publishing.

If you’re considering pursuing, or have already dived into the self-publishing world, these sessions are a must.

Special Sessions with Steven James

Critically acclaimed author Steven James takes time during his two sessions to discuss his view of what it takes to craft a great story.

In his first session, Story Trumps Structure, James explains why your story must be free to follow its own path, rather than a predetermined structure that’s been identified as “most correct” by writing instructors, writing texts, and popular fiction.

Then, in Six Secrets to Novel Writing No One Ever Told You , James shares his secrets to writing a successful novel. Find out what he and other respected writers do that most do not, and learn how you can apply those lessons to your own work. You’ll not only improve your chances for publication, but also learn how to produce the best work possible.

“[Steven James is] A master storyteller at the peak of his game.” -Publishers Weekly

In The Keys to Writing Successful YA and Middle Grade Fiction , respected agent Mary Kole offers a look into what’s working in the Middle Grade and YA categories. Learn how to take advantage of the market and make sure you’re positioned for success.

The Great Temecula Book Drive

Temecula, California - April 23,2012

The vision is well known.  The benefits are far reaching. The drive itself is local. The event is “green.”Business Women's Network of Temecula ValleyThe Business Women’s Network of Temecula Valley (BWN) is generating revenue for the Friends of the Temecula Libraries Bookstores (FOTL) through the Great Temecula Book Drive.

Books are magnificent, awesome, happy, and interesting. They help the young and the old learn, and they keep everyone smart. And from now through December 31, 2012  BWN is collecting books, DVD’s, CD’s, and VHS tapes in good condition at Tesoro Winery (28475 Old Town Front Street at 6th Street, Temecula, 951-308-0000).

According to Vice President Chair Kimberly Olson this program is in its 4th year.  “We felt it’s  a chance to reach out to the community as business owners with children and grandchildren in this valley. Its one small way we can contribute our collective resources and give back.”  One of the group’s goals is, “To build awareness of the great programs available for children at our libraries, collect enough books on this drive to fund new programs for the kids, and learn new ways to make the drive even more successful next year”. $.95 from every dollar in book sales go the library to provide extra services, materials, and enhancements – especially children’s programs.

The dollars made from the sale of the books, CD’s, DVD’s, and VHS tapes  fund a whole host of children’s programs, including story time, holiday craft projects, and performances.   Vice President Olson shares, “It’s amazing to watch what the ‘FOTL’ does to support our children. It does your heart good to be a part of such a wonderful process.”

The “Friends” stores stock a wide variety of hardback books (both fiction and non-fiction), paperbacks, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, cassette tapes, Books-on-tape, puzzles and games (on occasion) and so much more.  Average price of books at the bookstore range from $5 to 3 for $2.00, depending on the copyright date.

Business Women's Network of Temecula Valley
Business Women’s Network (BWN)  is a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and networking opportunities for women in business. Each month members of BWN come together for  networking opportunites and learning experiences as well as social activities and camaraderie.During the meeting/luncheon, relevant topics are presented by speakers selected for their expertise in subjects of interest to businesswomen.
